Federal Boost for Youth Jobs: What It Means for Calgary's Future Workforce
Calgary, get ready! On November 4, 2025, a significant federal investment was announced, poised to inject vitality into our youth job market. ECO Canada is celebrating a major boost aimed squarely at tackling youth unemployment, a move that’s particularly welcome as Calgary continues its impressive economic diversification.
This isn't just national news; it's a game-changer for young Calgarians eyeing careers in our burgeoning green and blue economies. A three-year, $635 million investment is heading to the Student Work Placement Program, alongside a two-year, $308 million allocation for the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy Program. These funds are set to directly benefit local initiatives like the Science Horizons Youth Internship and Digital Skills for Youth, crucial as Calgary leads North America in tech job growth and expands its renewable energy sector.
Kevin Nilsen, President & CEO of ECO Canada, called it a "vital step toward building a 'resilient and future-ready workforce.'" With our city actively working to attract and retain young talent and boasting a Youth Employment Centre already assisting those aged 15-24, these programs arrive at a pivotal moment. The new Workforce Innovation Fund, part of Budget 2025, adds another $382.9 million over five years, focusing on training and credential recognition. This ensures our youth are not just finding jobs, but building sustainable careers in a city committed to a vibrant, diversified future.
