UCalgary Researchers Take the Spotlight with Canada Research Chairs

Our city’s innovation scene just got a major shot in the arm with nine University of Calgary researchers being named Canada Research Chairs. Announced nationally on March 13, 2025, and recognized locally on May 8, 2025, these appointments highlight UCalgary’s pivotal role in cementing Calgary as a global hub for groundbreaking research and a magnet for top talent.

These brilliant minds, including six new Chairs and three renewals, are diving deep into fields like quantum computing, Indigenous science, and complex neural systems. This is huge for Calgary, especially as our tech sector continues its explosive growth, with a 61.1 percent increase in tech jobs between 2021 and 2024, the fastest in North America. Quantum computing, in particular, is a hot topic, with UCalgary already boasting Canada’s first hands-on, industry-oriented quantum computing program and the recent launch of Calgary's first quantum accelerator in March 2025.

Beyond the tech boom, the focus on Indigenous science resonates deeply with Calgary's ongoing commitment to reconciliation and diverse ways of knowing, mirrored by initiatives at places like TELUS Spark Science Centre. And for those tackling complex neural systems, their work at institutions like the Hotchkiss Brain Institute contributes to Alberta’s goal of becoming a global leader in neuroscience, improving brain health for all.

These Canada Research Chairs aren't just academic accolades; they're an investment in Calgary's future. They mean more cutting-edge discoveries, a stronger economy, and an enhanced reputation as a place where big ideas flourish and talent thrives. UCalgary already has an annual economic impact of $16.5 billion on Alberta's economy, supporting nearly 22,500 jobs, and these new Chairs will undoubtedly fuel further growth and diversification. It’s a win for UCalgary, and an even bigger win for our vibrant city.
