Smile! November's Photo Radar Keeps Calgary's Streets Safer

Calgary, a heads-up: November's photo radar is on patrol to make our roads safer, especially as traffic fatalities hit concerning highs. In 2024, our city saw 29 fatal collisions, the highest in over a decade, with 13 involving pedestrians. This year, as of October, 30 lives have been lost on our roads, 11 of them pedestrians, a deeply troubling trend since 2021. Speed is a critical factor in these tragedies, with studies suggesting strict adherence to limits could slash injuries and fatalities by up to 70 percent.

You'll spot enforcement in communities like Albert Park/Radisson Heights, Capitol Hill, Coventry Hills, Crestmont, Falconridge, Glendale, Glengarry, Killarney, McKenzie Lake, McKenzie Towne, Mount Pleasant, Parkland, Penbrooke Meadows, Pump Hill, Ramsay, Renfrew, Shaganappi, Shawnessy, and West Hillhurst. Crucially, construction zones with workers present are also hot spots, where fines are doubled. Fifty-seven Intersection Safety Cameras around town catch red light runners, and five still nab speed-on-green offenders despite recent provincial changes.

These efforts align with Calgary’s Safer Mobility Plan 2024-2028 and the ultimate goal of Vision Zero – eliminating fatalities and major injuries. This plan, a unified effort by the City and Calgary Police Service, aims for a 25% reduction in serious collisions over five years. Blow past the limit by 50 km/h and you’re looking at a judge, up to $2,500 in fines, and a license suspension. Stay safe out there, Calgary.
