Calgary's Tech Future: $1M Boost Energizes Innovation
Calgary's tech landscape just got a significant boost. The city is doubling down on its reputation as a burgeoning innovation hub with a $1 million investment from the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund (OCIF) into the Xpand Commercialization Hub. Announced on October 23, 2025, this funding is set to supercharge the growth of defence and dual-use technologies right here in our city.
This move isn't just a local win; it's part of a larger $9 million project, also backed by PrairiesCan and aerospace giant Boeing Canada, solidifying Calgary's position as a NATO-aligned dual-use technology leader. Spearheaded by Calgary-based ConvergX, the hub will offer critical services like technology testing, validation, and export readiness training, helping Alberta businesses turn defence-related innovations into market-ready solutions for sectors like energy, agriculture, and AI. This is crucial, especially as Calgary recently jumped to #17 in North American tech rankings, seeing 61% growth in tech talent in just three years.
Brad Parry, CEO of Calgary Economic Development and OCIF, emphasized the vision: "With OCIF's investment in the Xpand Commercialization Hub, we're helping those innovators bridge the gap between late-stage development and real-world deployment—accelerating growth, creating jobs, and positioning Calgary as a vital contributor to Canada's defence and technology future.” This investment underscores Calgary's momentum, aligning with the city's ambition to become Canada's innovation capital, fostering talent and attracting new tech companies.
