Big Moves for Small Businesses: Calgary’s New Blueprint

Calgary's small businesses are the beating heart of our city, driving local culture, creating jobs, and keeping our neighbourhoods vibrant. But let's be real – they're facing some big hurdles. From inflation and rising operational costs to supply chain woes and even uncertainty from international trade, it's not always smooth sailing.

That's why the Calgary Chamber's "Go Big on Small Business" report, launched during Small Business Week (October 20-24), is a big deal. This comprehensive policy framework lays out recommendations for all levels of government to step up and build a more resilient and competitive business landscape right here in Calgary. In fact, small businesses make up over 95% of all businesses in our city, contributing significantly to our economy.

The Chamber's recent findings underscore the urgency, with 66% of Calgary businesses identifying cost pressures as their primary challenge, directly limiting their growth potential. Many feel current municipal support simply isn't cutting it. This report aims to change that, advocating for crucial shifts like streamlining regulations, ensuring tax fairness, and boosting access to talent and investment. Just imagine the impact if every Calgarian spent an extra $10 locally each month – it could generate 82 new jobs and an $8.3 million boost to our GDP! This isn't just about business; it's about the unique shops, diverse services, and local flavour that make Calgary, well, Calgary.
