Ring the Alarm: Essential Safety for Calgarians This Week

This comes right from the City of Calgary News Room—Fire Prevention Week is here, and Calgary Fire Department, alongside ATCO, is taking action. On Thursday evening, they visited Rundle, offering to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and teaching residents about home escape plans. This comes after a carbon monoxide incident hospitalized five Calgarians this week. Fire Chief Dongworth warns about the modern speed and danger of house fires, stressing the importance of alarms and escape plans in every home. Did you know that residents might have less than two minutes to evacuate once a smoke alarm goes off? In just a decade, homes in Calgary have seen significant changes in material use, leading to faster, more intense fires. Last year alone, Calgary experienced over 700 carbon monoxide cases, peaking during heating season. This initiative is vital, as ATCO reports handling around 3,000 CO incidents annually across Alberta. The Calgary Fire Department's safety program has visited over 539,000 homes since 1996, ensuring Calgarians live safely. Fire Prevention Week runs from October 5-11, and you can find more info at calgary.ca/firepreventionweek.
