Calgary’s Streets in Focus: Safety Plea After 3 Tragic Collisions
Here is one that comes from the Calgary Police Service! Calgary witnessed its third pedestrian fatality in just 24 hours on Thursday, Oct. 16, when an elderly woman was struck by a car in Woodlands. At around 8:30 p.m., the victim was crossing Woodpark Boulevard S.W. at the intersection of 117 Avenue S.W. A 20-year-old driver, heading north in a 2016 Subaru BRZ, was involved. Sadly, the woman died at the scene, marking Calgary’s 30th fatal collision of the year—already surpassing last year's 10-year high—and the 11th involving a pedestrian. This distressing trend underlines October’s Pedestrian Safety Month. Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward emphasized vigilance, urging all Calgarians to adjust their habits as the season changes. In Calgary, a community that values safety and respect, every road user must play their part to prevent these tragedies. The City’s ongoing Safer Mobility Plan aims for Vision Zero—no fatalities or major injuries on our roads. Share any insights on this incident via 403-266-1234 or anonymously with Crime Stoppers.
