Standing Against Hate: Calgary’s Call to Action

Here is one that comes from the Calgary Police Service! On June 24, 2025, a disturbing incident unfolded at Southland Drive and Southport Road S.W., sparking a deeper conversation about hate crimes in our city. Around 2:20 p.m., a couple was attacked by a man who hurled a racial comment before fleeing the scene. The man, Kyle Thompson, 32, later turned himself in for another assault downtown and was linked to this case. Scheduled to appear in court on October 17, 2025, Thompson faces charges of assault and assault causing bodily harm. Hate motivation, if established, can increase sentencing as an aggravating factor. Calgary’s spirit stands firmly against such violence. With our multicultural community, understanding and respect are core values. In 2023, Calgary saw a rise in hate-motivated crimes, mirroring trends in many Canadian cities. The police remind us that recognizing and reporting hate is crucial.
