NE Calgary Shooting: New Video Shows Gunman in Extortion Case

New video shows gunman in NE Calgary extortion shooting case.

CALGARY, AB — New video footage has surfaced showing a gunman firing at a home in northeast Calgary, the latest incident in a months-long extortion series that has rattled the community.

Calgary Police Service confirmed today they are investigating the shooting as part of an ongoing extortion case. The video, which circulated on social media early this morning, captures a suspect approaching a residential property and discharging a firearm before fleeing.

Part of a Broader Pattern

This shooting adds to a troubling tally. As of February 23, 2026, CPS is investigating 28 extortion-related cases across Calgary. Thirteen of those incidents are connected to shootings.

The series has primarily targeted members of the South Asian community in NE Calgary since July 2025. Police have linked two recent shootings in the 8400 block of Saddle Ridge Drive N.E. and the 300 block of Savanna Park N.E. to the extortion campaign.

The Investigation Widens

CPS is working alongside the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) to crack the case. The collaboration reflects the scope and sophistication of the crimes, which have escalated from threats to gunfire.

The federal government has pledged support. In February 2026, Ottawa unveiled a 'Follow the Money' strategy, mobilizing the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) to prioritize financial intelligence for extortion cases. Budget 2025 allocated $1.7 billion to bolster the RCMP's capacity to fight transnational organized crime, including 150 new personnel dedicated to financial investigations.

Legislation to establish a new federal Financial Crimes Agency is expected by spring 2026.

A Community on Edge

Despite a 22% drop in shootings citywide in 2024, the extortion-linked violence has residents in NE Calgary on high alert. Alberta's Budget 2025 included $8 million to support additional officers in Calgary and Edmonton under the Safe Streets Action Plan, which also funds gang suppression and firearms investigation units.

CPS continues to urge anyone with information about the extortion series to come forward. As the investigation unfolds, the video serves as a stark reminder: this isn't just a police matter. It's a community safety issue that demands attention and action.
