Calgary's Shaw Family and the Media Shift Everyone's Buzzing About
Calgary’s media landscape is seeing another significant shift. The Shaw family, a name synonymous with telecommunications in our city, is stepping back from its controlling interest in Corus Entertainment. This marks a new chapter for a family whose influence has shaped Western Canadian media for decades.
As of November 3, 2025, Corus Entertainment, parent company of Global News, announced a recapitalization that fundamentally alters its ownership. Debtholders will now hold a commanding 99% stake, reducing the Calgary-based Shaw family's voting control to a mere 1%.
This move follows closely on the heels of the $26 billion acquisition of Shaw Communications by Rogers, a deal that saw another cornerstone of the Shaw empire change hands, though with conditions for a Western HQ remaining in Calgary. Corus itself is a broadcast behemoth, operating 15 conventional TV stations, 25 specialty channels, and 36 radio stations across the country. The transaction redefines the Shaw family's media footprint, signaling an era of significant change for one of Calgary's most prominent business legacies.
