HAWCS Essential in Dangerous Carjacking Apprehension
Calgary's Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety (HAWCS) unit proved its vital role recently, assisting in the apprehension of a dangerous carjacking suspect. On Sunday, November 16, police responded to reports of an assault and vehicle theft in the 900 block of 32 Avenue N.E. The victim sustained minor injuries after their black Honda CRV was stolen.
The suspect’s actions escalated quickly, reportedly driving into oncoming traffic on major routes like Crowchild Trail and Deerfoot Trail, and attempting to carjack other vehicles. Staff Sgt. Mike Sushelnitsky of the Real Time Operations Centre underscored the extreme danger posed by the suspect. HAWCS provided the crucial aerial surveillance that allowed ground units to safely track the suspect, leading to an arrest and averting further public risk. Charges against the man are pending.
HAWCS, celebrating 30 years as Canada's first municipal police air patrol, consistently demonstrates its effectiveness. The unit is recognized for its rapid response, often reaching incidents within eight minutes and providing an invaluable "eye in the sky" that enhances officer safety and supports thousands of apprehensions annually.
