Calgary Steps Up: First Asphalt Shingle Recycling Facility Opens
Calgary is stepping up its game in the fight against waste, with Northstar Clean Technologies announcing the grand opening of Empower Calgary, Canada's first commercial asphalt shingle reprocessing facility. Slated for November 12, 2025, at 285081 Wrangler Way, Rocky View County, this facility marks a pivotal moment for sustainable construction.
The innovative plant is poised to divert an impressive 80,000 tonnes of shingle waste from landfills annually, transforming it into reusable resources and significantly slashing emissions. This aligns perfectly with the City of Calgary's ambitious climate strategy, which aims for net-zero emissions by 2050 and an interim target of 70 percent waste diversion by 2025 across all sectors. Construction and demolition waste currently make up approximately 20 percent of materials entering Calgary landfills, highlighting the immense local impact of this new facility.
Empower Calgary recently hit a major operational milestone, processing over 80 tonnes of shingle feedstock daily. Aidan Mills, CEO of Northstar, confidently states this "sets a national precedent in industrial decarbonization and job creation right here in Calgary." The grand opening will feature key speakers including Justin Riemer, CEO of Emissions Reduction Alberta, and Chantelle de Jonge, MLA of Chestermere-Strathmore, underscoring the collaborative effort towards a cleaner, greener future for our city.
