East Village's Vibrant Transformation: A Blueprint for Downtown Success
A Vision Realized in East Village
Once known as Calgary's "skid row," East Village has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis, spearheaded by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC). Established in 2007, CMLC’s mandate was to revitalize the Rivers District. The 2009 East Village Master Plan laid the groundwork for transforming this 49-acre neighbourhood into a vibrant, mixed-use urban hub, a decades-long strategic renewal now evident in its lively calendar of events, such as the Winter Warm Up Series and the Village Commons Indoor Market.
Sparking Economic Growth
These diverse programs are more than just community gatherings; they are crucial drivers of economic impact. Drawing both residents and visitors, they increase foot traffic for local businesses like Charbar, Mr. Sun Tea, and CHIX Eggshop, many of which host events. CMLC's initial investment of over $400 million in infrastructure has already attracted nearly $3 billion in planned private investment, fueling a diverse array of residential, retail, entertainment, and cultural offerings.
The Heart of Downtown Calgary
The City of Calgary, through CMLC, actively cultivates this vibrancy, programming over 700 activities annually in the Rivers District. This commitment to place-making directly aligns with the City's broader Downtown Strategy, aiming to create dynamic public spaces and engaging experiences. East Village, projected to house 11,500 residents at full build-out, stands as a shining example of downtown revitalization, contributing significantly to Calgary's core as a thriving 24/7 destination.
