Cyber Sleuths Wrangle Rogue Loan Sharks in Alberta’s Digital Wild West!
Yeehaw, Cybersecurity Awareness Month kicks off with a cyber showdown! Calgary Police Service's Cybercrime Team just wrapped up a two-and-a-half-year investigation into telephony denial of service (TDoS) attacks launched by online loan company, Sonic Cash 500. The nuisance calls flooded phone lines, disrupting everything from families to a local shopping mall. Fast forward to February 2024, and search warrants were executed across Montreal and Laval, Quebec, seizing thousands of documents and 200+ electronic devices. The digital cowboys lassoed four culprits—Steven Mancini, Johnny Rioux, Scott Geddes, and Megan Wartoukian—who rode into court on Nov. 4 and 5, 2025, charged with extortion and harassment. CPS thanks their posse: Alberta's Consumer Investigations Unit, Sûreté du Québec, Laval and Montreal Police Services, RCMP, and CBSA. Tip from the Alberta government: avoid sketchy lenders and keep your banking details under lock and key. Been a victim of cybercrime? Call CPS at 403-266-1234 or hit up Crime Stoppers.
