Calgary Honors Heroes: Field of Crosses Pays Tribute for 17th Year

Calgary’s iconic Field of Crosses is back for its 17th year, transforming Memorial Drive into a poignant sea of white. From November 1st to 11th, this powerful tribute honours Canada's fallen soldiers.

More than 3,700 crosses represent Southern Albertan heroes, each bearing their name, rank, and date of sacrifice. An additional 120 crosses remember other Canadian service members. This annual tradition began in 2009, a vision from local businessman Murray McCann.

Calgary embraces remembrance deeply. The city observes daily sunrise and sunset ceremonies at the Field of Crosses, often accompanied by buglers and pipers. On November 10th, the "Night of Lights" illuminates the entire field with lanterns, creating an unforgettable display.

Consider this: Canada saw approximately 42,042 armed forces fatalities in the Second World War alone. The Field of Crosses, with its thousands of individual tributes, serves as an impactful reminder of these profound losses. Calgarians are invited to visit this beautiful commemoration, reflect on these stories of bravery, and truly connect with our country's history as Remembrance Day approaches. Don't miss this profound display.
