Hey Calgary, Hold the Fireworks—Here's Why It's a Big Deal Right Now
Calgary, it's time for a reality check before the fireworks hit. With Diwali on October 20, 2025, and Bandi Chhor Divas following on October 21, 2025, the city is once again clamping down hard on unauthorized fireworks. These cultural celebrations, while vibrant, often see an uptick in private displays, and officials are urging caution.
Why the strict stance? Our city is experiencing one of the driest fall seasons on record. The wildfire danger in the Calgary forest area was elevated to very high in September due to warm, dry, and gusty conditions. Pete Steenaerts, Deputy Chief of Risk Management at the Calgary Fire Department, warns that "one spark could set off a fire that could damage your home or community." Beyond fire risks, illegal fireworks create excessive noise, disturb pets and residents, and can be deeply triggering for individuals living with trauma or PTSD.
Last year, the situation was serious. The Calgary Police Service responded to over 200 fireworks-related calls during a six-day period, many linked to cultural festivities. Critically, the Calgary International Airport even considered shutting down an active runway due to fireworks being set off nearby.
Ignorance is no excuse. Many residents told police in 2024 they were unaware of the bylaws. Here's the deal: possession of fireworks without a permit carries a minimum $500 fine. Using them without a permit, or selling them, means a minimum $250 fine. More severe non-compliance can lead to fines up to $100,000 for a first offense and up to $500,000 for a second, plus potential jail time.
So, let's keep Calgary safe and sparkling responsibly. Leave the pyrotechnics to the pros. If you see unauthorized fireworks, dial 311.
