Calgary, We Need to Talk About Voting!
Calgary, let's talk numbers. The recent civic election on October 20, 2025, saw a mere 348,626 Calgarians cast a ballot for our next mayor. That’s a stark contrast to our city’s booming 1.6 million population, and significantly lower than the 393,090 who voted in the 2021 municipal election. This shockingly low turnout has many wondering: are we really showing up for our city?
When nearly 1.3 million residents opt out, it raises serious questions about who is truly being represented. Political analysts point out that in elections with lower turnout, the impact of every individual vote becomes even higher. Yet, critical decisions affecting our daily lives — from navigating soaring housing costs and addressing homelessness to tackling crime, improving transit, and managing property taxes — are left to a fraction of the population. Our rapid population growth is already straining infrastructure and services, making these decisions more vital than ever.
Calgary is renowned for its incredible community spirit, shining brightly during events like the Stampede, which brings thousands of volunteers and fosters immense civic pride. We rally together for the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. Why can't we bring that same enthusiasm and engagement to the polls? Decisions made by our elected officials directly shape our neighbourhoods and our future. Let’s make a date for the next election and ensure Calgary's voice is heard loud and clear.
