Tragic Downtown Collision: 87-Year-Old Woman Struck in Crosswalk
Another serious incident has put downtown Calgary pedestrian safety in the spotlight. A woman was hospitalized with significant injuries Saturday, November 1, 2025, after being struck by a vehicle at approximately 2:45 p.m. She was crossing Ninth Avenue S.E. at the First Street S.E. intersection when the collision occurred.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns for Calgarians using our bustling urban core. Recent data shows a troubling trend: 2024 saw a ten-year high in pedestrian fatalities with 13 lives lost on Calgary roads, a stark increase from four in 2023. Alarmingly, nearly half of those pedestrian deaths last year happened in crosswalks.
The City of Calgary and the Calgary Police Service are actively working to make our streets safer through the Vision Zero initiative and the Safer Mobility Plan (2024-2028), aiming to eliminate traffic fatalities and major injuries. Efforts include lowering the default speed limit on residential roads to 40 km/h in 2021 and implementing temporary traffic calming curbs at over 150 locations to reduce speeds and shorten crossing distances. Despite these initiatives, every incident underscores the critical importance of both cautious driving and pedestrian vigilance.
Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact the Calgary Police at 403-266-1234 or submit a tip through Crime Stoppers.
