Calgary Ramps Up Efforts Against Impaired Driving This December

Calgary is intensifying its crackdown on impaired driving throughout December, aligning with Alberta's Traffic Safety Calendar, which highlights alcohol and drug impairment as a priority this month. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to road safety through the province's Immediate Roadside Sanctions (IRS) program, which allows police to issue swift penalties, including licence suspensions and fines, at the roadside.

Impaired driving remains a significant issue in Alberta, contributing to one in five fatal collisions. In Calgary alone, five of the 35 fatal crashes this year have involved impairment. Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward of the Calgary Police Service emphasizes that every impaired driving collision is preventable, urging community members to make safe choices and support others in doing the same.

Police can now demand breath samples from any lawfully-stopped driver, even without suspicion, highlighting the zero-tolerance approach. Those caught face immediate sanctions alongside potential criminal charges. The stepped-up enforcement coincides with Calgary's "Safer Mobility Plan 2024-2028," aiming to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 25% over five years, contributing to a broader goal of a 50% reduction by 2030.

The social and economic impact of impaired driving is profound, costing Calgary approximately $956 million annually. The city’s efforts reflect the Vision Zero philosophy, ensuring everyone’s right to arrive safely. With increased checkstops and public awareness campaigns, Calgary is committed to making its roads safer this holiday season.
