Owls Spotted East of Calgary Herald Winter Arrival
Calgary birdwatchers were thrilled this week as the first Snowy Owl of the season was spotted east of the city, accompanied by a pair of Short-eared Owls. The sighting, shared by local weather enthusiast Kyle Brittain, highlights the region's role as a winter haven for these majestic birds.
Snowy Owls, which migrate from the Arctic tundra, often choose the open fields of Wheatland and Kneehill Counties as their temporary winter homes. These areas provide an ideal habitat, mirroring the birds' natural environment with expansive grasslands and sparse tree cover.
The Short-eared Owl, meanwhile, is a species of concern in Alberta, classified on the 'Blue List' due to potential risks to its population. These owls favor grassland regions, making the areas east of Calgary crucial for their survival during the colder months.
Globally, the Snowy Owl faces vulnerability due to environmental pressures, with recommendations from Canadian wildlife committees to assess it as 'threatened.' Such sightings not only excite local birdwatchers but also emphasize the importance of conservation efforts to protect these species.
