City of Calgary Teams Up with Northstar for Landmark Shingle Recycling Contract
Northstar Clean Technologies Inc. has secured a five-year contract with the City of Calgary, set to begin in April 2026, to reprocess waste asphalt shingles. This agreement coincides with the city's renewed Shingles Recycling Program, a move aimed at significantly advancing waste diversion by transforming discarded materials into reusable products.
The new Empower Calgary facility, located in Rocky View County, positions itself as one of North America's first commercial-scale asphalt shingle recovery operations. It boasts the capacity to process up to 80,000 tonnes of shingle waste annually, diverting a substantial amount from landfills and aligning with Calgary's ambitious climate strategy, which targets 70 percent waste diversion by 2025 across all sectors. This initiative not only creates up to 30 local jobs but also underscores Alberta's commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation, contributing to Canada's emissions reduction targets.
Aidan Mills, Northstar's CEO, stated, “Together with The City of Calgary, we're transforming what was once a landfill problem into a circular economy solution.” This collaboration marks a significant shift towards sustainable waste management practices and could serve as a model for other municipalities. With construction and demolition waste currently accounting for approximately 20 percent of materials entering Calgary landfills, the Empower Calgary facility represents a crucial local impact in the city's ongoing efforts to reduce landfill volumes.
