Calgary Man Charged in Tesla Arson Cases Amid Growing EV Concerns
A Calgary man, Kurt Mayville, 38, has been charged with two counts of arson following the deliberate burning of two Tesla vehicles in March 2025. These incidents underscore rising security concerns amid Calgary's burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) market.
The first fire occurred on March 18, 2025, when a Tesla Model Y was set ablaze at a Beltline charging station. The following night, a Tesla Cybertruck was similarly targeted at a storage lot on Fairmount Drive. Both fires were extinguished by the Calgary Fire Department and identified as deliberately set using accelerants.
The Calgary Police Service Arson Unit, utilizing witness accounts and CCTV footage, identified Mayville as a suspect. DNA evidence at one of the crime scenes further implicated him, leading to his arrest. Mayville is scheduled for a court appearance on January 12, 2026.
These arson cases highlight vulnerabilities within Calgary's evolving urban infrastructure, as the city experiences a significant rise in EV adoption. The Beltline incident draws attention to the need for enhanced security as the city expands its EV charging network, vital for achieving climate resilience goals.
Calgarians with information on these incidents are encouraged to contact the police or submit tips anonymously via Crime Stoppers. The community's involvement was pivotal in advancing this investigation, showcasing the essential role of public engagement in combating property crime.
