Calgary Jewish Federation Voices Concern on City Hall Flag Event

Community Sentiment on Display

Calgarians often seek to understand the collective sentiment of the city's Jewish community on sensitive issues. While this community, estimated at 6,000 to 8,500 individuals with historical roots dating back to 1889, holds diverse views, the Calgary Jewish Federation (CJF) serves as a central organizing body and frequent public voice.

The CJF recently expressed "deep disappointment and alarm" regarding a Palestinian flag-raising at City Hall on November 14, 2025. The Federation characterized the event as "highly politicized and divisive," particularly at a time when Jewish Calgarians reportedly face "unprecedented levels of fear and antisemitism." This statement reflects significant concerns within a community where nearly two-thirds reside in Southwest Calgary, and which is supported by institutions like the Paperny Family JCC, established in 1979.

The Federation's strong stance highlights the complexities faced by local institutions when balancing public expression with the deep-seated safety and social cohesion concerns of diverse communities.
