A recent traffic alert concerning a pedestrian incident at 4 Street SW and 10 Avenue SW has once again brought Calgary's pressing road safety challenges to the forefront. This downtown intersection, like many across our city, is a daily thoroughfare for Calgarians, and such incidents highlight growing concerns.

City Efforts Amid Rising Fatalities

Calgary, a bustling city in Alberta, has pledged to eliminate traffic fatalities through its Vision Zero initiative and the Safer Mobility Plan 2024-2028. However, efforts face a stark reality: 2024 has seen 13 pedestrian fatalities, a significant increase from four in 2023 and the highest in over a decade. Factors like speeding, distracted driving, and increasingly larger vehicles contribute to these tragic outcomes, costing the city an estimated $1.2 billion annually.

In response, the City has implemented measures including a 40 km/h default speed limit on residential roads, engineering improvements like rapid flashing beacons, and a dedicated Traffic Safety Team.
