Meet Titus: Calgary’s Newest Firefighting Hero on Four Legs

Calgary, meet your newest hero on four paws! Titus, the Calgary Fire Department’s two-year-old American Field Labrador, has been making headlines since his March debut, already proving to be a game-changer for public safety. Paired with Fire Investigator Brad Brookes, Titus is a highly specialized K9, capable of sniffing out even microscopic drops of ignitable liquids at fire scenes.

This dynamic duo has tackled 33 fire investigations since March, dramatically boosting the accuracy and speed of arson detection in our city. Why does this matter to Calgarians? Arson incidents in Calgary can lead to significant property damage, displace residents, and pose serious safety risks, as recently highlighted by blazes causing millions in damages and prompting police investigations. Faster, more accurate investigations help deter these destructive acts and bring quicker resolution to impacted communities.

But Titus isn't all work and no play. He’s also a star in the community! You can spot him at local schools and libraries, charming Calgarians while promoting vital fire education. This engaging role perfectly aligns with the Calgary Fire Department’s ongoing commitment to robust fire prevention, education, and safety programs for residents of all ages.

Raised in Wisconsin and trained under the Canine Accelerant Detection Association (CADA) program, Titus’s expertise in hydrocarbon detection is invaluable. This innovative partnership is fully funded by AGAT Laboratories, meaning no cost to Calgary taxpayers. Want to meet the star in person? Head to the Calgary Public Library on November 27 at 11:00 a.m. in the gallery.

Titus isn't just sniffing liquids; he’s enhancing security, making Calgary a safer place one investigation at a time.
