Calgary's Mayoral Race Gets a Recount Twist: What You Need to Know

Calgary’s mayoral race, part of the General Election held on Monday, October 20, 2025, officially wrapped up after a city-wide recount was held on October 27, 2025. Jeromy Farkas was officially confirmed as Calgary's new Mayor-Elect following the recount.

The recount, a critical step aimed to ensure every ballot was accurately tallied, was particularly vital for Calgarians given the slim 581-vote margin separating the top two candidates, Jeromy Farkas and Sonya Sharp.

The recount was triggered by a request from the runner-up, Sonya Sharp, under Section 98.1 of the Local Authorities Election Act. This section allows for a recount when the difference between the first and second highest number of valid votes is within 0.5% of the total votes cast for that office. Sharp emphasized that the request was about strengthening public confidence and ensuring transparent and consistent election standards across Alberta. The recount itself took place at the Big Four Roadhouse.

Elections Calgary, our city’s impartial electoral body, meticulously managed the recount, correcting mayor ballot accounts where necessary. This commitment to transparency is key for Calgarians, especially as public trust in the City of Calgary's governance has been a significant topic in recent years. By ensuring every vote is counted accurately, the process reinforces the integrity of our local democracy, allowing residents to feel confident their voice truly counts.

The official, corrected results are now available online for all interested Calgarians to review.
