Calgary Breakthrough: Cold Case Solved Nearly 50 Years Later

Calgary Police Service (CPS) detectives, in a collaborative effort with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), have brought resolution to a nearly six-decade-old disappearance. Anna Sylvia Just, who was reported missing from Calgary in 1966, has now been identified as a victim of homicide through a recent DNA match.

The breakthrough came following renewed investigative efforts by CPS's Historical Homicide Team. In October 2024, Calgary detectives contacted their counterparts in Nevada, tracing Anna's last known movements from Calgary to the state. A crucial DNA sample provided by Anna’s sister culminated in the identification of remains originally found in 1970.

“This case exemplifies our unwavering dedication to victims and their families,” stated Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson. This resolution underscores the persistent commitment of the Calgary Police Service's Historical Homicide Team. Local law enforcement, in conjunction with the RCMP, has recently seen successes in resolving other decades-old cases in the Calgary area through the application of advanced DNA technologies and investigative genetic genealogy. These ongoing efforts by the CPS to tackle their approximately 120 historical homicide and 56 missing person cases offer a measure of hope to other families in the city still seeking answers for their loved ones.
