Mayor Farkas Champions Community Voices with Bold Upzoning Repeal
Mayor Jeromy Farkas, fresh off his October 2025 election victory, is moving to repeal the controversial blanket upzoning, making good on a key campaign promise. This marks a definitive pivot towards prioritizing community voices in Calgary's ongoing development debates.
The initiative aims to curb the previous council’s city-wide rezoning, which in May 2024, changed many single-family residential zones to allow for more housing types without individual public hearings. That decision sparked the longest public hearing in Calgary’s history, with 736 residents speaking their minds – a clear indicator of strong community sentiment. Over 60 percent of those speakers voiced opposition, highlighting a significant disconnect.
Mayor Farkas's plan prioritizes effective, community-led planning. It moves the focus from solely developer interests back to ensuring balanced, sustainable growth that truly reflects residents' needs. This is about ensuring Calgarians have a real say in shaping their neighbourhoods.
