Calgary's City Council: What to Expect in the Next 4 Years

Calgary’s political landscape just got a major shake-up! On October 20, 2025, Calgarians elected a fresh City Council, featuring Mayor Jeromy Farkas and 14 councillors. This isn't your average council, folks. We’re looking at nine Independent members – eight councillors and our new Mayor – alongside six councillors from municipal parties: four from Communities First, one from The Calgary Party, and one from A Better Calgary. This unique blend means no clear-cut party majority, promising a dynamic four years ahead.

This diverse council arrives at a critical time for our growing city. Calgarians are keenly watching how they'll tackle pressing issues. For starters, public transit is a hot topic, with nearly half of city businesses dissatisfied with current investment and Calgary Transit facing a projected $33 million revenue shortfall for 2025. Our rapidly increasing population puts immense pressure on everything from affordable housing, which remains a crisis despite Calgary leading the country in housing starts per capita, to urban development. The city has already implemented city-wide rezoning to encourage more housing options, a policy many new councillors campaigned on reviewing.

Beyond the daily commute and housing woes, the new council will also navigate Calgary’s vibrant economic outlook, which is expected to outperform provincial and national trends, even with rising unemployment due to high population growth. Our booming arts and culture scene, marked by significant investment in projects like the Arts Commons expansion, is also a key part of the city's identity.

Mayor Farkas and this new council were officially sworn in on October 29, 2025, with the city budget as their immediate first order of business. This blend of experienced and new voices is set to shape Calgary’s future, balancing our energy sector roots with a drive for innovation and sustainability. Keep those voices heard, Calgary – it’s going to be an interesting ride!
