Unlocking Easy Streets: New Calgary App Expands Downtown Routes

Hey, Calgary! Navigating our vibrant downtown just got a whole lot smoother. The Pedesting app, a brilliant local innovation, is expanding its reach, making urban exploration easier for everyone. Launched in September 2023, this Made-in-Calgary gem maps out the easiest and safest pedestrian routes, a real game-changer for anyone hitting the streets, especially those with accessibility needs.

In November 2023, Pedesting added four new downtown locations to its system: the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre, Stephen Avenue Place, Life Plaza, and Bow Valley College. These join the initial three zones of Arts Commons, Brookfield Place, and the Central Library, bringing the app's coverage to seven key downtown spots. For co-founder Nabeel Ramji, a wheelchair user, this app is about more than just directions; it's about confidently tackling barriers and fostering an inclusive city.

This expansion couldn't be timelier for our city. With Calgary's Greater Downtown Plan pushing for revitalization and a shift from "vacancy to vibrancy," initiatives like Pedesting are crucial. It perfectly complements the city's ongoing commitment to enhancing walkability and accessibility, evident in projects like Plus 15 network upgrades and accessible public spaces in areas like East Village. Whether you’re exploring Stephen Avenue, heading to a cultural event, or simply commuting, Pedesting ensures a hassle-free journey through Calgary’s evolving heart.
