Calgarians Urged to Back National Animal Abuse Registry

Calgarians, it's time to speak up for our voiceless companions! A federal e-petition (e-6884) calling for a Canada-wide Animal Abuse Offender Registry is officially approved and open for signatures in the House of Commons. This is a critical step to deter repeat offenders and protect animals nationwide.

Here in Calgary, our Humane Society consistently works to protect animals. They conducted over 1,000 animal cruelty investigations in 2022, removing more than 500 animals from unsafe situations. Our local shelters also face ongoing challenges, with high surrender rates due to cost of living and a lack of pet-friendly housing options. These efforts highlight the urgent need for stronger, more consistent legal tools to prevent abuse. Nationally, Canada received a "D" grade from World Animal Protection in 2020 for its animal protection laws, indicating significant room for improvement.

This proposed registry would be publicly searchable, listing individuals convicted of animal abuse for ten years. It aims to prevent known abusers from re-acquiring animals by requiring shelters, rescues, and breeders to deny adoptions or sales to listed offenders. This ensures abusers cannot simply move provinces and continue their cycle of cruelty.

The e-petition is open until February 18, 2026, at 12:01 p.m. (EDT). To add your voice, visit ourcommons.ca and search for e-6884. Remember to verify your email after signing. Your local support can make a huge national difference. Let's unite for a safer community for all creatures.
