Alberta Schools: Firearms Reports Trigger Multi-Community Response

ALBERTA — RCMP responded to firearms reports at schools in at least three communities across the province today, triggering support protocols for students and staff.

Edmonton schools activated support services for affected students, while similar incidents unfolded in Fort McMurray and other Alberta communities. Investigations remain active.

Provincial Pattern Emerges

The multi-community nature of today's incidents marks an escalation in school safety concerns across Alberta. RCMP currently serve approximately 40% of the province's population across 95% of its geography.

Edmonton Public Schools, which reintroduced School Resource Officers to six high schools in February 2025 after a five-year pause, is coordinating its response through existing safety frameworks. The SRO program returned to Jasper Place, M.E. LaZerte, Ross Sheppard, Eastglen, Harry Ainlay, and Queen Elizabeth high schools.

Support Systems Activated

School authorities deployed counseling resources and crisis response teams. The incidents come as Alberta's K-12 system operates under a $9.9 billion operating budget for 2025-26, which includes an additional $55 million specifically allocated for complex classroom supports and staffing.

Details on arrests, charges, or weapon recoveries have not been released. RCMP investigations continue across all affected communities.
